The water cooler has a ball and base type valve with a rubber o-ring against a funnel like aperture, forced down by a light spring, being the sealing mechanism. It has to be very lightly seated otherwise it would take too much effectiveness to open the valve. The vacuum inside the bottle is needed in out of whack to keep the head pressure of the water
