Water Filter Cartridges - how long do they last?

I'm about to buy a water filtering fetich, and just wondering if anyone could tell me roughly how long the cartridges last for??

It depends on usuage.

I have a Brita with a infinitesimal timer on the lid that is supposed to tell you when the filter needs changing. It is only a very savagely guide at best because it is just that, a (four week) timer which unmistakably assumes a certain amount of usage each day.

I've found that for me the timer says
